Special Issue "Design Kindness for Vulnerable Populations"

Special Issue Information: A special issue of Art and Design
The Council of International Medical Science Organizations defines vulnerable populations as "individuals or groups that are relatively (or absolutely) unable to protect their own interests due to the lack of resources such as power, intelligence and education". These groups include children, the elderly, the mentally or physically ill, the material poor and so on. The latest report of the United Nations shows that the world is facing complex population problems, especially in developing countries where there are many poor people. At the same time, the aging of the population is serious, which has a profound impact on social development. Faced with such a situation, we should think about how to deal with the problems related to vulnerable populations, and design how to intervene in order to achieve the balance of social public relations. Professor Kin Wai Michael SIU of public design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, believes that only in the light of physiological, social, cultural, psychological and ideological aspects, while constantly adapting to changing needs, can people-oriented care be given to different users. Therefore, we should consider the physical and mental needs of vulnerable populations in a multi-dimensional way and multi-design.
Design Kindness for Vulnerable Populations aims at discussing how to enhance the subjective well-being of vulnerable populations and eliminate the design contradictions of social public affairs through design. It is emphasized that design services should not only be designed for the general public, but also for the people of these vulnerable populations. In addition, more consideration should be given to design risks and responsibilities, so that design is always full of a warm smile.
